Breathtaking views?  Everything that is associated with the very word can be found in our vast array of castles located around the country.  With over 3,000 stately homes, castles and ruins located throughout Scotland, choosing which one to visit can be difficult.  From the fortress dominating the Edinburgh skyline to the structures perched on the shores of the Isle of Skye, here are some of the Scottish castle highlights that are not to be missed:

Edinburgh Castle

Set atop an extinct volcano, high above Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh Castle is one of Scotland’s most famous castles.  Boasting views of the whole City and offering guided tours throughout, it is definitely worth a visit when you are in Scotland.  The stunning landmark which dominates the City’s skyline is picturesque in both summer and winter and is opened all year round for you to enjoy.  Located just 40 minutes from Glasgow, you have no excuses to miss this!

Balmoral Castle

Queen Victoria lovingly described Balmoral Castle as her ‘dear paradise in the Highlands’ and it remains a private home of the Royal Family to this day.  When not in residence, visitors can enjoy exhibitions in the Castle Ballroom, the largest room in the castle, and wander through the charming gardens and grounds of the plot.  Construction of the Castle was completed in 1857 and it now spans over 50,000 acres and includes grouse moors, agricultural land and forests.

Glamis Castle

The red sandstone walls of Glamis have been home to many colourful characters throughout the centuries, not least of them the late Queen Mother.  It also famously features in Shakespeare’s Macbeth.  Crowned with battlements and pointed turrets, Glamis is the epitome of baronial grandeur.  Located in the heart of Angus Glamis has been witness to over a thousand years of history and is one of the most picturesque landmarks Scotland has to offer.

Stirling Castle

Located less than an hour from Glasgow City Centre, Stirling Castle offers a great day out for the whole family.  Costumer courtiers, bodyguards and servants help to illustrate life within the castle grounds from years gone by and provide the whole family with an educational experience.  Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s grandest castles due to its imposing position and impressive architecture. The Scenery will take your breath away.  Top tip, book tickets online in advance, particularly during the summer, as spaces are limited!

Inveraray Castle

The romantic Inveraray Castle on the shores of Loch Fyne is one of Scotland’s finest stately homes.  Located just 60 miles north-west of Glasgow, the castle stands tall against a backdrop of Highland scenery.  The Castle is the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell and a must-see attraction on the West Coast.  Built in the 1700s and restored after a fire in 1877, the castle displays a truly modern yet gothic architectural design for all to appreciate.
